Bus Stop

I lived in Gulfport, MS when I was a little girl in the early 60s. One Saturday, my mother (who couldn’t drive) and I rode a bus downtown to do some shopping.  Later that day, with our packages in tow, we boarded another bus to return home. The only seats available were in the back, so my mother and I proceeded to the rear. The driver shouted for us to return to the front because the back was for “coloreds” only. My mother said she didn’t mind who we sat with and then we made our way to the seats. The driver shouted again for us to stand up or get off. I’ll never forget my mother’s defiance (because she was not usually an assertive person!) as we marched down the length of the bus to get off!
